The Four Arcs, Explained
Each arc is a self-contained five-book story with its own prophecy and its own cast of dragonets. You can technically start at the beginning of any arc, but each one assumes you know what happened before.
Arc 1: The Dragonet Prophecy (Books 1–5)
| # | Title | Year | Narrator | Tribe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Dragonet Prophecy | 2012 | Clay | MudWing |
| 2 | The Lost Heir | 2013 | Tsunami | SeaWing |
| 3 | The Hidden Kingdom | 2013 | Glory | RainWing |
| 4 | The Dark Secret | 2013 | Starflight | NightWing |
| 5 | The Brightest Night | 2014 | Sunny | SandWing |
Five dragonets are raised in secret under a mountain, destined by prophecy to end a war they never asked to be part of. Each book switches to a different one of the five. This is where everyone starts.
Arc 2: The Jade Mountain Prophecy (Books 6–10)
| # | Title | Year | Narrator | Tribe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Moon Rising | 2014 | Moonwatcher | NightWing |
| 7 | Winter Turning | 2015 | Winter | IceWing |
| 8 | Escaping Peril | 2015 | Peril | SkyWing |
| 9 | Talons of Power | 2016 | Turtle | SeaWing |
| 10 | Darkness of Dragons | 2017 | Qibli | SandWing |
A generation later, dragonets from every tribe are sent to Jade Mountain Academy to learn to live together. It doesn't go smoothly. Most longtime readers rate this arc the strongest of the four.
Arc 3: The Lost Continent Prophecy (Books 11–15)
| # | Title | Year | Narrator | Tribe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | The Lost Continent | 2018 | Blue | SilkWing |
| 12 | The Hive Queen | 2018 | Cricket | HiveWing |
| 13 | The Poison Jungle | 2019 | Sundew | LeafWing |
| 14 | The Dangerous Gift | 2021 | Snowfall | IceWing |
| 15 | The Flames of Hope | 2022 | Luna | SilkWing |
The story crosses the ocean to a second continent, Pantala, and introduces three tribes nobody in Pyrrhia knew existed. Book 14 brings the two continents back together.
Arc 4: The Forgotten Isles Prophecy (Book 16 onward)
| # | Title | Year | Narrator | Tribe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | The Hybrid Prince | 2026 | Umber | MudWing |
The Hybrid Prince came out on March 3, 2026 and opens the fourth arc, following Umber, the youngest of the MudWing siblings. If your reading guide stops at 15, it's out of date — this is the current book.
Further books in the arc have not been given titles or firm publication dates yet. If you see a listing with a 2027 date attached to "Book 17," that's a retailer placeholder rather than an announcement.
The Ten Dragon Tribes
Half the fun of this series is arguing about which tribe you'd belong to. There are ten, split across two continents.
| Continent | Tribe | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Pyrrhia | MudWings | Strong, loyal, siblings hatch and stay together |
| SandWings | Desert dragons with a venomous barbed tail | |
| SkyWings | The fastest and strongest fliers | |
| SeaWings | Underwater breathing, glowing scales for speech | |
| IceWings | Frostbreath, serrated claws, rigid social ranking | |
| RainWings | Colour-changing scales and venom that dissolves almost anything | |
| NightWings | Once said to read minds and see the future | |
| Pantala | HiveWings | Varied weapons — stingers, venom, paralysing bites |
| SilkWings | Metamorphose at age six, gaining wings and silk | |
| LeafWings | Plant magic; thought extinct for fifty years |
Legends: The Two Standalone Novels
- Darkstalker (2016) — a prequel set roughly two thousand years before Arc 1, telling the origin of the series' most dangerous dragon.
- Dragonslayer (2020) — runs parallel to the main story but follows human characters (called scavengers by the dragons).
When to read Darkstalker — the one real debate
This is the question fans genuinely disagree about, and it's worth getting right because reading it at the wrong moment spoils things.
Do not read Darkstalker before Arc 2. That much everyone agrees on. It gives away reveals that Books 6–10 are built around.
After that, there are two camps:
- After Book 9, before Book 10. You go into the Arc 2 finale already knowing the history, which makes the climax land harder. This is the most commonly recommended placement.
- After Book 10. You already understand why Darkstalker matters, so the prequel reads as a tragedy rather than a puzzle. Readers who prefer this order argue the book is simply better when you know where it ends up.
Either works. Pick one and don't let anyone tell you it was wrong.
Dragonslayer is far more relaxed about placement — it's usually slotted in around Book 13, and the spoiler risk is minimal either way.
Winglets: The Five Novellas
Short digital side stories, each following a character from the edges of the main books. None are required reading, but they're a nice way to stretch out Arc 2.
- Prisoners (2015) — Fierceteeth
- Assassin (2015) — Deathbringer
- Deserter (2016) — Six-Claws
- Runaway (2016) — Foeslayer and Arctic
- Hero (2026) — Prince Cliff
A common way to space them out is one after each of Books 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Print note: The Winglets Quartet (2020) collects the first four in a single paperback. The fifth, Hero, is digital-only and is not in that collection — so if you buy the Quartet expecting all five, you'll come up one short.
The Graphic Novels
Scholastic's Graphix imprint is adapting the main series in order, with art by Mike Holmes and colour by Maarta Laiho. Nine volumes are out:
- The Dragonet Prophecy (2018)
- The Lost Heir (2019)
- The Hidden Kingdom (2019)
- The Dark Secret (2020)
- The Brightest Night (2021)
- Moon Rising (2022)
- Winter Turning (2023)
- Escaping Peril (2024)
- Talons of Power (2025)
Darkness of Dragons, the tenth, is scheduled for December 29, 2026. Arc 3 has not been adapted yet.
Separately, Darkstalker: A Graphic Novel arrived in November 2025, illustrated by Jake Parker rather than Mike Holmes. It sits outside the numbered run.
Two things worth knowing if you're buying for a reluctant reader: the graphic novels are adaptations, not extra story, so they're a substitute for the novel rather than an addition to the order. And they're an excellent on-ramp — plenty of kids read the first few in comic form and then switch to the novels once they're hooked.
Is There a Wings of Fire TV Show?
Not yet, and the history here is messy enough that it's worth stating plainly.
Netflix announced an animated series in 2020 with Ava DuVernay attached as executive producer, then cancelled it in May 2022 during a round of cuts to its animation division. It never aired.
The project was revived in 2024 at Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video. In May 2025, Aaron Waltke (Star Trek: Prodigy, Trollhunters) was announced as showrunner, with Tui T. Sutherland co-writing and executive producing.
As of September 2026 there has been no premiere date, no casting announcement and no trailer. The series is still listed as in development. Ava DuVernay is not attached to the Amazon version.
Reading Age and Content Notes
Scholastic lists the series at ages 8–12, grades 3–7, with most volumes falling around 700L–800L. In practice it's read a good deal wider than that — plenty of teenagers and adults are deep in it.
For parents deciding whether a younger child is ready: this is a war story. Dragons die, sometimes on the page, and characters the reader likes are among them. The later arcs get somewhat darker. It's handled without gore, and the series is fundamentally warm-hearted, but a sensitive seven-year-old may find Book 1 heavier going than the cover art suggests.
The flip side is that it's one of the most reliable series in existence for converting a reluctant reader into a voracious one. The chapters are short, the hooks are constant, and there are sixteen books waiting.
Build the Set in Used Copies
Sixteen books new is well past $150. Used is how most families actually get through this series — and a dragon book that's been read twenty times has earned its creases.

If they've finished all sixteen
The question every Wings of Fire parent eventually faces. A few that land well with the same readers:
- City of Dragons #1: The Awakening Storm — $5.32. A dragon graphic novel pitched squarely at this audience.
- Spirit Animals #5: Against the Tide — $5.20. Same author, different world.
- Survivors #2: A Hidden Enemy and Bravelands #6: Oathkeeper — $5.20 and $5.32. Erin Hunter's animal-clan series are the usual next stop.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Wings of Fire books are there?
Sixteen main-series novels as of 2026, plus two Legends novels, five Winglets novellas and ten graphic novels (nine adapting the main series, plus a standalone Darkstalker).
What is the newest Wings of Fire book?
The Hybrid Prince, Book 16, released March 3, 2026. It opens the fourth arc, The Forgotten Isles Prophecy.
What is the first Wings of Fire book?
The Dragonet Prophecy (2012). Start there — the series is designed to be read from the beginning.
Do I need to read Wings of Fire in order?
Yes, more than most series. Each arc builds directly on the last, and characters carry across. You could start at Book 6 or Book 11 if you had to, but you'd be spoiling yourself.
When should I read Darkstalker?
After Book 9 and before Book 10 is the most common recommendation. Reading it after Book 10 also works well. Just don't read it before Arc 2 — it spoils major reveals.
Are the graphic novels the same story?
Yes. They're adaptations of the novels, in order, not extra material. Nine are out, covering Books 1 through 9.
Is there a Wings of Fire movie or TV show?
Not yet. A Netflix series was cancelled in 2022. An animated series is currently in development at Prime Video with showrunner Aaron Waltke and author Tui T. Sutherland, but no release date has been announced.
What age is Wings of Fire for?
Ages 8–12, grades 3–7, per the publisher. It's a war story with character deaths, so consider whether a younger or more sensitive reader is ready.
How many dragon tribes are there?
Ten. Seven in Pyrrhia (MudWings, SandWings, SkyWings, SeaWings, IceWings, RainWings, NightWings) and three in Pantala (HiveWings, SilkWings, LeafWings).
