In Luther's sermons or postils for the Chief Feasts and Saints Days, Luther discusses in great detail and depth the relationship of faith to human reason (enlightenment). His thoughts under Scripture can certainly shed some light on the spirit and the despair of our age. In an age of reason, why does reason often fail to hold? Many current issues are sorely contested and polarizing. They are often demagoged not so much by reason's evaluations and reasonable plans for solutions, by by emotion and painful pleading for toleration for what reason is unable or unwilling to handle. When reason attempts to shine its light, it's cool bright light suddenly seems to turn into impenetrable darkness and confusion. The writings reported in this work issued at near the dawn of the enlightenment. Luther gives a corrective and a limit to human reason which the world of the enlightenment has managed to largely ignore. it is important to heart Luther's words today. Rev. Joel R.
