The "SpellingYouSee" program from Demme Learning is a unique, research-based homeschool spelling curriculum with five levels that follow the developmental stages of language development. Developed by Dr. Karen Holinga, this program allows students to develop spelling skills naturally and at their own pace with the direction and encouragement of the instructor. Relying upon visual memory that's built through repeated reading and repeated writing, students will learn spelling through short daily activities that integrate copywork, reading, speaking, and listening, rather than relying on rote memorization for weekly tests. Spelling You See Level American Spirit is suggested for a student who is at least nine years old and who spells common words confidently. Do not place a child who is new to the program in a level higher than American Spirit (see the More Information [PDF] for an explanation of each stage). When determining placement, these are questions to Is my student at least 9 years old? Can my student comfortably write an entire paragraph? The following passage is written at the minimum reading level for American Spirit. Can your student read it without difficulty? Colonists were tired of British rule. They wanted their rights to be respected. Some men formed a congress. They wrote a letter to the king and asked him to make things better. The king did not change. Then they wrote the Declaration of Independence. All the men signed their names. The president, John Hancock, wrote his name in big, fancy letters. 56 pages with glossary, softcover. 9.25" x 8".
