Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon is a classic hard-boiled detective story that was first published in 1930. It follows private detective Sam Spade as he becomes entangled in a web of lies, greed, and murder centered on the Maltese Falcon, a mysterious and extremely valuable statuette. Spade and Miles Archer, his partner, are hired by Miss Wonderly to find a missing man. This is the beginning of the story. Soon after, Archer is murdered, and Spade finds himself caught between law enforcement, a femme fatale, and a group of ruthless criminals—all vying for possession of the elusive falcon. Spade must rely on his sharp wit and unwavering sense of self-preservation to survive and discover the truth as he navigates lies, double crosses, and violence. The novel's sharp, fast-paced dialogue, morally ambiguous characters, and gloomy, cynical setting helped define the noir detective genre. Sam Spade, with his tough, pragmatic attitude and sharp intelligence, became one of the most iconic private eyes in literature. Multiple adaptations of The Maltese Falcon have been made, most notably the 1941 film starring Humphrey Bogart.
